The Hike to Poo Poo

A perfect PNW day

In every walk with nature one receives far more that he seeks.

Many people complain that it rains to much in Seattle. That is just untrue, Seattle gets the same annual rain fall as Boston, New York and other cities. The difference is that Seattle gets its rainfall stretched out over months where as Boston and New York get a day of heavy rain.

This means that most of year Seattle is grey and cloudy with light mist alot. Seasonal Affective disorder is very real in Seattle given our grey and chilly fall and winter seasons it is important to realize that even on the worst of these days there is still plenty of beauty to witness, even when things seem their worst.

Great Hike with a funny name

Stop snickering at the name..

First things first is to explain the juvenile name this trail has. Simply put this trail leads to Poo Poo Point on West Tiger Mountain in Issaquah, WA. The point got its name due to the sound of a whistle that was sounded whenever a log was sent down when this mountain was primary used for logging. Now Poo Poo Point is primary used as a launching point for para-gliders and a destination for hikers and horseback riders.

The Hike

Our hike started in the mid morning. I met up with a local hiking group and was hiking with three people that I have never met before. We were all of different ages, backgrounds and futures but here we were making sure everyone of us is safe and has a good time.

We set out for our hike and the weather was chilly with heavy low clouds, but thankfully no rain. We had planned for 8 mile round trip from the parking lot to Poo Poo Point.

I knew that we were not going to get much in the way of scenic vistas along the way or when we got to the top. Supposedly you can see Seattle and parts of Tacoma from Poo Poo Point. So I turned my attention to the ground to spot some interesting photos and I found plenty.

Thoughts on the trail

Most of my thoughts on the trail were actually how to start this blog. The name of the blog, the theme, the future of the blog and the possible missteps (of which there will be many).

I thought about how small our world is and that maybe we are more connected with other people that some people believe. For example, I never would have meet these three people without the hiking group or the internet that helped me find this group. The social networks that could keep us connected and even this blog to make connections with even more people.

I realized that a day of “bad” weather does not have to ruin your day so long as you are prepared for it and want to have a good day when it seems like you will only have a bad day.

Highlights

Completing any hike safely is of course always a highlight.

Meeting my hiking partners and getting to know them was another great highlight. There stories of how they got here and what they enjoy.

The fact that I was having a slow and down morning and doubting that I wanted to do the hike. Yet despite the weather I was determined to do the hike and my time outdoors put me back on center as usual.
